5 Days to an Organized Closet

It is the one job that we all hate – organizing our closets! After all, it’s much easier just to toss stuff in there, slam the door and pretend it doesn’t exist. It may be a lot easier but it’s not the most organized way to keep track of all of your personal items and it can cause more frustration in the long run.

But organizing your closet doesn’t have to be such a painful job. The key is to take it one day at a time. Here is a simple 5-day plan that will help you get an organized closet.

The first thing you need to do is totally empty out your closet. Take absolutely everything out of the space and put things into piles. For example, make one pile for old clothes that you don’t wear, another pile for torn clothes or clothes that are too small and a pile of odd things like exercise equipment, baskets, etc.

Now that you have gone through all of the items in your closet, sort through each pile and toss out anything you don’t want or need. Always donate items that are still like new. There is no reason to throw clothes or shoes in the garbage that someone else may be able to use.

Next, try to seek out other places to keep items stored that don’t belong in your closet. Try finding room in your shed, garage or an unused room of your house. Even a basement inside a tote would work well. This will free up space in your closet for footwear, accessories and clothing.

Once you have thrown away, given away or found a new place to store your closet contents, it is time to take a guess at how much space you will need for the rest. Grab some paper and a pen and make a list of each item and how you want to store it. Then add up how many hanging items you have recorded, how many things that will need to be folded, pairs of shoes, etc. This will help you decide how to configure your closet. Remember to add in some extra space for unexpected and seasonal items.

Make a list of luxury items that you feel would make your closet ideal. Have you always wanted pull out shelves? Maybe a great new light fixture? Or perhaps a new tie rack would make his life a lot easier. It is important to add these little extras if it fits your budget. You deserve to reward yourself for tackling such a dreaded chore!

Closet organization can be very fulfilling if you just do it! But it is important to do it correctly and allot enough time to complete the job properly.
